Wordpress and Joomla!

A content management system is software that runs on the web server and keeps track of every piece of content on your web site. Content can be simple text, photos, video, documents, products or just about anything else you can think of. A major advantage of using a content management system is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage.

The best website content manager in the world should be the one that is portable and non-proprietary. WordPress and Joomla both fall in that category.

The Differences

While WordPress and Joomla are both great ways to create and maintain a web site, we’ve experienced a few things that has made us lean more towards WordPress for future development. While Joomla! is great to use with a fresh install, updating from major versions, like 1.5 to 2.5, or 2.5 to 3.0, has become a tedious and unpredictable task. Each extension installed will need to be replaced with the version that corresponds with the new Joomla! release, which sometimes involves loosing data or having to reimport it. Letting a Joomla! site get too far behind on the most up to date version will pose serious security threats too. While we have successfully converted from one version to the next, and will continue to offer that service, we prefer to put new sites on WordPress. Updates with WordPress do not affect the installed extensions (called Plugins within WordPress) and are as easy as a click of a button. We install a security plugin in each WordPress site too to verify that any suspicious looking behaviors by potential bots get alerted.
